Musical Me

The Backstory

I listen to music. I analyze music. I play music. I write music. I record music.

I love music.

I am constantly evolving and growing creatively. I also think I’m getting better at the technical stuff. I have over 30 years of experience as a writer/performer. As such, I have found that my style of writing has gone through many phases, but the art of crafting a uniquely compelling piece of music is just as satisfying today as it ever has been. And that’s what keeps me going.

For the past decade, I have been focusing on songs that fit into the “Christian Rock” genre. I happen to find the topic of God, spirituality and the wonders of our shared human experience to be inspiring. It might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but it’s my website and my music… so there you have it.

I hope you like what you hear. If you do, the songs* are available for purchase and subsequent download here. Just click on the PayPal button thingy underneath the album art. You can also have a listen to a short preview of each song.

Please feel free to listen to my music and share this webpage with your friends. I would love it if you chose to reward me for my efforts by buying some of the tunes… no pressure.

Regardless, there is only one thing I ask:  Please respect the creative process and do not copy, download or otherwise steal my work for your own purposes (personal or for resale). That would be extremely uncool. Remember… someday, we all leave our physical bodies and find ourselves in a place where there is nothing but time to reflect upon the things we did here on earth. Make sure you can respect yourself when that time comes.

Cheers!

Not for sale or profit. I just love these songs. So I decided to record my own version.

Background Stories

The singer, Emmanuel Okafor, is part of our 5:00 choir at St Albert the Great Parish in Calgary, Alberta. We had been planning to get together and record this tune for quite some time (over a year) and we finally got our schedules lined up. Her came over and we laughed at my little studio setup and then we hit record.

I first heard this tune in 1980 all because my older brother bought the “Duke” album. Being a young keyboard player who was in awe of any band that had a keyboard player on the prog-rock edge of things, I decided to dive a bit further back into the past albums of Genesis and told my piano teacher that I wanted to learn some of their tunes. He asked me which ones, and this is one of the first tunes I tried learning from their “Wind & Wuthering” album.

The irony is that this tune was written by the guitarist, Steve Hackett, and Phil Collins. Not a Tony Banks in sight.

I recall one day when I was trying to learn the intro, it was raining hard and my mom always had at least one TV and one radio blaring in other rooms in the house. I decided to add in some of that atmospheric detail using found sound and audio clips to intro and outro the tune.

The rest is just me putting my personality into the musical delivery.
